Canada has confirmed a case of hantavirus linked to an outbreak aboard a luxury cruise ship. Health authorities in British Columbia confirmed the case after the individual developed mild symptoms and was tested in Victoria.
Four Canadians from the ship are currently isolating on Vancouver Island, including two couples from Yukon and British Columbia. Authorities added that the group had no contact with the public after arrival.
The Andes strain of hantavirus can cause severe respiratory illness and may be fatal in serious cases, according to the World Health Organization. Globally, the death toll from the outbreak currently stands at three.
