Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa appeared before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption today to record a statement in connection with an alleged 2 million dollar bribery payment linked to a 2013 aircraft procurement deal involving state-owned SriLankan Airlines.
Former Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne has also reportedly been summoned as part of the investigation.
Rajapaksa’s lawyer and media spokesman Manoj Gamage said legal consultations were ongoing regarding the summons, claiming it was based on a confession by former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena that was later withdrawn in an affidavit alleging threats.
Chandrasena was found dead last week under suspicious circumstances, days after a court ordered his re-arrest in the ongoing Airbus corruption probe.
