40th anniversary of Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Pope Leo warns risks of powerful technologies

Pope Leo on Sunday warned of the risks posed by increasingly powerful technologies, as Ukraine marked the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

The remarks came as Ukraine held solemn commemorations for the nuclear tragedy, which remains one of the worst in global history. Around 31 deaths official recorded, but the deaths were much more due to long-term effect.

The mishap had happened back on 26 April, 1986.

Meanwhile, Rafael Grossi, Chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, called for the start of repair work at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, highlighting continued concerns over safety and infrastructure at the site.
