A delegation of transgender activists from across India met the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, today in the presence of Congress MPs and senior leaders.

The delegation expressed strong opposition to the government’s proposed Transgender Persons Bill, stating that it undermines their right to self-identify their gender, a right upheld by the Supreme Court.

They highlighted that the Bill could strip lakhs of transgender individuals, including those from historically recognized communities, of legal recognition and protection.

They also raised concerns over provisions they described as dehumanizing and punitive, including mandatory medical examinations, criminal penalties without adequate safeguards, and the dilution of existing protections.

Gandhi assured the delegation that the Congress party stands firmly with the rights and dignity of transgender persons and will oppose the Bill in Parliament.
