U.S. Senate leaders clashed on Monday after President Donald Trump ordered weekend strikes on Iran. Lawmakers offered sharply divided reactions as tensions escalated following the military action.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the administration had pursued diplomacy but was forced to act after Iran refused off-ramps. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, however, accused Trump of launching the United States into a full-scale conflict.

The Pentagon downplayed fears of an open-ended war, even as officials warned of possible further casualties. U.S. officials have indicated the campaign could extend for days, with reports suggesting a sustained operation that may last weeks.
