The United States today called for a new arms control agreement following the expiration of the New START nuclear treaty on Thursday. The U.S. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control stated that extending the treaty would not benefit the U.S. or the world, describing it as flawed and noting that it did not include China.
On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump rejected an offer from Russian President Vladimir Putin to voluntarily extend the caps on strategic nuclear weapons deployments after the treaty expired.
Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador Gennady Gatilov said that other nuclear-armed states, including the United Kingdom and France, should be included in any future nuclear talks with the United States, following Washington’s call for three-way negotiations with Moscow and Beijing.
