Under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat programs, Electronics manufacturing in India has expanded significantly over the past 11 years.

According to data shared by Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, the production of electronics goods increased from ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to ₹11.3 lakh crore in 2024-25, while exports rose eightfold to ₹3.3 lakh crore.

Mobile phone production saw a dramatic rise from ₹0.18 lakh crore to ₹5.5 lakh crore, and exports surged 127 times to ₹2 lakh crore, making India the world’s second-largest mobile manufacturer. India transitioned from a net importer of mobile phones in 2014 to a net exporter today.

The government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing, launched in 2020, has driven investment of ₹15,172 crore and created over 1.71 lakh jobs. PLI 2.0 for IT Hardware, launched in 2023, further strengthened domestic production and reduced import dependence.

Cumulative production under the PLI schemes reached ₹10.39 lakh crore by December 2025, while total investment and direct employment stood at ₹856.64 crore and 4,776 jobs respectively.

Other government initiatives over the last 11 years include the SPECS scheme, Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 1.0 & 2.0), the Semicon India Programme, reforms in taxation, preferential public procurement for domestic products, and allowing 100% FDI in electronics manufacturing.

These steps aim to build a robust electronics ecosystem across mobile phones, consumer and industrial electronics, auto and strategic electronics, and telecom sectors.
