Japan on Monday said they have retrieved sediment containing rare earth elements from depths of 6,000 meters during a recent deep sea mission.

The mission is part of Japan’s efforts to curb dependence on China for these critical minerals, which are essential for high-tech industries.

The retrieved sediment will undergo detailed analysis to determine the exact quantity of rare earths it contains.

Officials described the operation as a significant step for both Japan’s economic security and its broader maritime development initiatives.
