North Korea today announced that it successfully fired long-range strategic cruise missiles into the sea off its west coast yesterday.
The tests were aimed at verifying North Korea’s nuclear deterrence capabilities and were described as a legitimate self-defense measure against external threats.
This comes after recent displays of a near-complete nuclear-powered submarine hull, intended for deploying nuclear missiles.
South Korea detected the launches and reaffirmed its readiness through its alliance with the United States.
Unlike ballistic missiles, these cruise missiles are not banned by UN resolutions, but their maneuverability allows them to evade radar, increasing potential risks.
Analysts have linked North Korea’s advancements to possible Russian technology transfers, and more tests may be expected ahead of next year’s party congress.
