China announced today that it is conducting major military exercises around Taiwan, with live-firing activities scheduled for Tuesday across five zones in the waters and airspace near the self-governed island claimed by Beijing.

A spokesperson for the Chinese military said that starting December 29, the People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command is deploying its Army, Navy, Air Force, and Rocket Force troops for joint military drills code-named Justice Mission 2025.

Taiwan has strongly condemned China’s announcement of large-scale military drills, describing them as acts of military intimidation and provocation that destabilize regional peace.

The island’s defense ministry has deployed forces to monitor the exercises while urging restraint.
