China has urged its citizens to avoid travelling to Japan after escalating diplomatic tensions sparked by remarks from Japan’s new prime minister about a possible attack on Taiwan.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s comments were widely viewed as suggesting Tokyo could consider military action in such a scenario.

Beijing summoned Japan’s ambassador for a formal rebuke, while Tokyo summoned China’s envoy over what it called an inappropriate online post.

Japan maintains that its official position on Taiwan remains unchanged. China’s embassy in Japan warned that recent comments had damaged the atmosphere for exchanges and posed safety risks for Chinese nationals.

Beijing continues to assert that Taiwan is part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to take control.
