British-Hungarian author David Szalay has won the 2025 Booker Prize for his novel Flesh, a haunting tale of ambition, loss, and identity.
This marks Szalay’s first Booker win after being shortlisted in 2016 for All That Man Is Flesh tells the tortured story of a Hungarian émigré who makes and loses a fortune, exploring themes of masculinity and moral decay through spare, powerful prose. Szalay triumphed over five other shortlisted authors to claim the prestigious literary prize.
Speaking to the Booker Prize organisers, Szalay said he aimed to craft a story that “began with Hungary, ended with England,” delving into Europe’s deep cultural and economic divides.
