Fresh clashes near the Afghanistan border have killed at least five Pakistani soldiers, even as delegations from both countries met in Istanbul to ease tensions following the deadliest fighting in years.

Afghanistan’s Taliban government has yet to comment on the latest clashes but has repeatedly denied harboring armed fighters, instead accusing Pakistan of violating Afghan sovereignty through air strikes.

Delegations from both nations arrived in Istanbul, Turkiye, on Saturday for talks aimed at preventing a return to full-scale conflict.

The meeting follows a ceasefire brokered by Qatar and Turkiye in Doha, intended to halt the most serious border fighting since the Taliban took over Kabul in 2021.

Earlier violence this month killed dozens and wounded hundreds.
