U.S. President Donald Trump began a three-day visit to Japan today, marking the second leg of his Asia tour.
President Trump is scheduled to meet Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the country’s first female Prime Minister, in what is seen as a major diplomatic test for Takaichi, who assumed office on October 21. The two leaders are expected to focus on strengthening the Japan–U.S. alliance and addressing key security concerns.
In addition to his meeting with Prime Minister Takaichi, President Trump will also meet Emperor Naruhito during his stay in Tokyo.
The stop in Japan follows President Trump’s participation in the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as part of his three-nation Asian tour.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the visit, stating it “sincerely welcomes the visit of President Trump” and describing it as “an ideal opportunity to reinforce bilateral cooperation and friendship between Japan and the United States.”
