India’s official nomination for 2025-26 cycle, ‘Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath’ got inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming India’s 45th property to receive this recognition.
The decission taken at the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee is being held at Busan, South Korea.
This global recognition celebrates India’s enduring cultural legacy, showcasing its diverse traditions of architectural brilliance, regional identity, and historical continuity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath lauded the historic milestone and congratulated the people of India for this achievement.
Calling it a proud moment for every Indian, Prime Minister Modi said that Sarnath has a close association with Lord Buddha, whose timeless message of wisdom, compassion and harmony inspires the world.
The Prime Minister added that this recognition celebrates India’s profound civilisational and spiritual heritage. It will also inspire more people across the world to come to Sarnath and connect with the ideals of Lord Buddha.
With 45 sites in the List, India ranks 6th globally and 2nd in Asia Pacific Region for the most number of World Heritage Sites. 196 nations have ratified the World Heritage Convention, 1972.
