Belgium’s “Golden Era” might have evolved, but their ruthless efficiency remains intact.

In a dazzling display of clinical finishing, Rudi Garcia’s Red Devils dismantled the USA 4-1 at Seattle Stadium, booking their spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026™ quarter-finals. With this defeat, Mauricio Pochettino’s side becomes the final co-host to exit the tournament, following Canada and Mexico out of the Round of 16.

From the opening whistle, Belgium looked a yard faster and a thought ahead. The American defense received its first warning when Timothy Castagne unleashed an 18-yard rocket that forced a spectacular, flying save from US goalkeeper Matt Freese.

Moments later, Youri Tielemans agonizingly missed connecting with a dangerous Dodi Lukebakio cross.

The breakthrough felt inevitable, and it arrived courtesy of sheer persistence. Leandro Trossard floated a teasing ball into the box that panicked the American backline, allowing Nicolas Raskin to flash a pass across the face of the goal for Charles De Ketelaere to tap home.

Just as Belgium looked to be cruising, the Seattle crowd was injected with a massive jolt of belief. In the 31st century, Malik Tillman stood over a free-kick and fired a shot that took a wicked deflection, completely wrong-footing Thibaut Courtois to level the score.

Before the host fans had even finished celebrating, Belgium struck back. Trossard turned provider again, whipping a brilliant cross from the left wing straight to the blooming De Ketelaere, who cushioned a precise header into the net to restore the Belgian advantage.

If the first half was about Belgian quality, the second was defined by an American catastrophe. Just before the hour mark, a communication breakdown saw Matt Freese race wildly out of his penalty area to clear a ball. He missed it entirely. De Ketelaere happily pilfered possession, feeding Hans Vanaken, who calmly lofted a long-range effort over a scrambling Tim Ream into the vacant net.

To their credit, the Stars and Stripes refused to go quietly. Substitute Sebastian Berhalter flashed a shot just wide, and Folarin Balogun saw a goalbound effort thwarted by the imposing Courtois.

But the final, emphatic exclamation point belonged to Belgium. Deep into stoppage time, a poor defensive clearance fell perfectly for substitute Romelu Lukaku, who seized the ball and finished with trademark aplomb.

After the match, Belgium coach Rudi Garcia said: “To everyone who got up in the middle of the night to support us, I’d like to say a huge thank you. They should be happy and proud of their players today. We showed that Belgium is a great football nation.”

Accepting the final result Mauricio Pochettino, USA coach said: “It was really tough from the beginning. We congratulate Belgium, they were better than us. It wasn’t our day. We need to learn, we need to assess the game and understand why we did not approach the game in the same way we did as we did in the rest of the World Cup.”

Belgium’s heavyweight clash with Spain at Los Angeles Stadium on 10 July promises fireworks—especially after La Roja eliminated Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal to get there. For the USA, it’s a bitter end to a historic home tournament.
