The four-time champion, Germany is out of the FIFA World Cup race. Paraguay has knocked Germany out after a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
The match finished 1-1 after extra time, before Paraguay stayed calm in the shoot-out to secure a historic victory and end Germany’s hopes of a deep tournament run.
Paraguay took the lead in the 42nd minute when Julio Enciso finished past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. Germany responded after the break, with Kai Havertz equalising nine minutes into the second half.
The match remained level through extra time, although Germany saw a headed goal from Jonathan Tah disallowed following a VAR review.
In the shoot-out, Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill saved penalties from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade to swing the advantage his side’s way.
Paraguay then missed two chances to win it before Jose Canale scored the decisive spot-kick after Tah blazed his effort over the bar.
Paraguay will now face either France or Sweden in the last 16 on July 5.
