FIFA World Cup 2026: Morocco beats Netherlands to advance to Round of 16

Morocco is through to the Round of 16 after a dramatic 3-2 penalty shoot-out win over the Netherlands in Monterrey,Mexico. The match finished 1-1 after extra time, before Morocco kept their composure in the shoot-out to win a thrilling contest.

The Netherlands took the lead in the 72nd minute when Cody Gakpo scored after a low cross from Crysencio Summerville.

Morocco pushed for an equaliser and levelled up in stoppage time when Issa Diop headed in a cross from Chemsdine Talbi, taking the match into extra time.

Both sides had chances in extra time but could not find a winner, taking the tie to penalties.

In the shoot-out, Morocco missed two chances to win it before Ismael Saibari scored the decisive spot kick after Hakimi had struck the post.

The Atlas Lions will now face co-hosts Canada in the last 16 on July 4.
