India’s rich medical heritage receives global recognition after a bronze statue of Maharishi Sushruta was unveiled at the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.
Maharishi Sushruta is widely revered as the Father of Surgery. The legendary Indian physician is also regarded as the pioneer of plastic surgery.
The bronze statue was crafted by a ‘sthapathi’ and his team at Swamimalai, near Kumbakonam, in Thanjavur district.
The installation of the statue of Sushruta at the world’s oldest surgical college is considered a befitting tribute to the ancient Maharishi.
The honour shines a spotlight on Sushruta’s enduring contributions to medical science and has renewed interest in the Sushruta Samhita, one of the world’s earliest known surgical texts.
