IYD 2026: PM Modi will lead main event in Kolkata

Addressing a curtain raiser press conferencetoday in New Delhi today, Union AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav said that the main national event of International Day of Yoga 2026 will be held in Kolkata on June 21, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the celebrations.

he Minister noted that the theme for International Day of Yoga 2026 is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”,  which addresses one of the most significant challenges of the modern era.

Jadhav added that yoga plays a vital role in helping people lead healthy, active, self-reliant, and mentally resilient lives as they age.

The Minister underlined that yoga has evolved into a global mass movement under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following the endorsement of India’s proposal by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014.

The minister said millions of people across the world have now adopted yoga as an integral part of their daily lives.

Minister Jadhav mentioned that this year’s International Yoga Day has received unprecedented support globally.

He added that coordinated by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), more than 210 Indian missions abroad are organizing Yoga Day programmes at nearly 2 thousand 5 hundred locations worldwide, demonstrating how yoga has transcended India’s cultural heritage to become a shared global movement for health and wellness.

The minister further announced that a special yoga programme was held yesterday, ahead of the main celebrations and it witnessed the participation of over 4 lakh people in a live yoga session, setting a new Guinness World Record.

Jadhav said that  Ministry of Culture is organizing special IDY 2026 events at hundred iconic and heritage sites across the country. He added that the initiative seeks to connect India’s cultural legacy, historical monuments, and yoga traditions, giving the observance the character of a nationwide festival.

Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Vd. Rajesh Kotecha, DDG, Ministry of Ayush Satyajit Paul, PDG, PIB. Dhirendra Ojha, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Sanghamitra Dash were also present during the media briefing.
