Varya, India’s first distilled AI video model developed by Avataar.ai is launched yesterday by Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, S Krishnan.

Built under the IndiaAI Mission, the model aims to make advanced video-generation technology more affordable, accessible and culturally relevant for Indian users.

According to the company, Varya employs a distillation technique that reduces the video-generation process from 50 steps to just four.

This enables video creation at a cost of ₹0.48 per second, making it up to 10 times more cost-efficient than several leading global AI video models.

The platform allows users to generate videos from text prompts or images and is designed for a wide range of applications, including education, commerce, governance and digital storytelling.

Describing the launch as a significant milestone in India’s artificial intelligence journey, Krishnan said innovations such as Varya demonstrate the country’s growing capabilities in advanced AI technologies.

Sravanth Aluru, CEO of Avataar, said the model showcases how efficient and context-aware AI systems can expand access to advanced technology at population scale.
