India summons US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks after attack on commercial vessel off Oman coast

India’s External Affairs Ministry yesterday summoned Chargé d’Affaires of the US, Jason Meeks following attack on commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman. In a statement, MEA has condemned the attack on the commercial vessel. Of the 24 Indian crew onboard, 21 Indians have been rescued so far, and three Indians are reportedly missing.

New Delhi expressed concern at the continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region, calling them deeply worrisome and a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the region.

India reiterated the call for immediate de-escalation of tensions and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution so that peace and stability can return to the region.

It said the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end.

India called for the restoration of free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the international waterways in the region, in keeping with international law at the earliest.
