Holy Hindu shrine, Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, is facing challenges in managing dry waste, with the increase in footfall.

Plastic bags and other things often end up in garbage dumps at tourist and religious destinations. In this view, the Rudraprayag district administration has launched the ‘Carry Me Back’ campaign.

This new campaign has a simple aim – to encourage Kedarnath visitors not to leave behind things that could end up as waste. The visitors will be expected to deposit such items at designated collection centres in Gaurikund.

Neeraj Kukreti, Executive Officer of Nagar Panchayat Kedarnath said that the Healing Himalayas Foundation and Sulabh International have jointly launched the ‘Carry Me Back Policy’ initiative.

Under this policy, pilgrims visiting Kedarnath will be provided with 400-500 grams of waste bags from the MRF (Material Recovery Facility) Centre located in the Nagar Panchayat Kedarnath area.

“Pilgrims can voluntarily carry these waste bags downhill and deposit them at a designated collection centre in Gaurikund”, he added.

Local authorities are taking all required efforts to ensure that mountains of garbage do not spoil the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
