International Nurses Day being observed today; President to confer the National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026

International Nurses Day is being observed today. The day is observed every year on May 12  to celebrate nurses and their contribution to healthcare around the world. The theme for this year is “Our Nurses”. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”

On the occasion, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio honoured the nurses, who serve with compassion, resilience, and professionalism every day.

In a programme President Droupadi Murmu will also confer the National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026 to outstanding nursing professionals at Rashtrapati Bhavan to commemorate International Nurses Day today.

In India, the award was instituted in 1973 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which recognizes the crucial role nurses play in India’s healthcare delivery.

The award ceremony highlights the government’s efforts to strengthen the nursing profession, including the establishment of nursing colleges and regulatory updates.
