Hungary’s veteran nationalist leader Viktor Orban lost power to the upstart centre-right Tisza party in Sunday’s national election after 16 years in office, marking a setback for his allies in Russia and U.S. President Donald Trump’s White House.
His landslide defeat handed Tisza’s Peter Magyar a comfortable majority in Hungary’s 199-seat legislature. As per official results, Tisza secured a two-thirds majority with 138 seats in the 199-seat parliament on 53.6 percent of the vote. Orban’s Fidesz took 55 seats on 37.9 percent of the vote.
Magyar pledged to restore checks and balances, ensure proper democratic functioning, and set Hungary back on the right course.
