Indian Railways has taken significant action keeping the safety of passengers. Tightening its grip on its own subsidiary—the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)—the Railways has imposed a fine of ₹10 lakhs.
According to reports, a complaint lodged by a passenger regarding the quality of food—specifically concerning irregularities observed on March 15, 2026, aboard Train No. 21896 (Patna–Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express)—has been taken with the utmost seriousness.
Consequently, a penalty of ₹10 lakhs has been imposed on IRCTC, while a fine of ₹50 lakhs has been levied on the concerned service provider, along with orders for the termination of their contract.
A spokesperson for Indian Railways stated that passenger safety and quality standards remain their highest priority.
It is worth noting that Indian Railways, through IRCTC, serves meals to over 1.5 million passengers daily across its vast network—making it one of the largest onboard catering operations in the world.
Passenger safety and food quality constitute the very cornerstone of this mission. Any violation of these standards results in immediate and stringent action.
