The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in collaboration with Miranda House, University of Delhi, marked International Youth Day on Tuesday with a national-level celebration centered around the theme “Importance of Volunteering.”
A key highlight of the event was a panel discussion featuring youth experts, including a think tank from the United Nations. Cynthia McCaffrey, UNICEF Representative to India, praised the role of India’s youth in national and global development.
“You are home to the largest youth and child population the world has ever known. It’s diverse, and the government is investing in it—not taking that demographic dividend for granted,” McCaffrey said.
Reflecting on the event’s energy, McCaffrey noted the passion and volunteer spirit of Indian youth: “What we saw today was a committed and energetic youth base, eager to engage and build the future of India.”
Addressing India’s role in the Global South, she added, “India has always been an innovation partner. From the Mark II hand pump to today’s digital entrepreneurs, we see Indian youth as a force for advancing South-South cooperation.”
The United Nations Representative concluded by calling Indian youth the “future of the world,” underlining the immense responsibility they hold in shaping both national and global progress.
