Young Brazilians are turning to Indian spirituality, learning ancient mantras and devotional music at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in São Paulo. The centre, run by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), is nurturing a growing interest in India’s sacred traditions.
Students here are guided by Indian gurus and music instructors, immersing themselves in practices that go far beyond performance. They are embracing the spirit of bhakti – devotion – as they learn mantras passed down through generations, connecting deeply with India’s cultural and spiritual essence.
“We’ve been singing mantras for about three years, this devotional music has become a part of our lives. We’re happy to be part of something that promotes peace and love, and it feels like a dream to live this spiritual experience so deeply,” said a student.
Another student shared her personal transformation: “Indian culture has changed my life over the past ten years. Though we’ve never been to India, we feel its presence in us. This bhakti comes straight from our hearts and flows through our music. We’re honored to share in this sacred tradition.”
The group then performed a soulful chant – “Jai Maa Durga, Jai Maa, Jai Jai Maa” – offering a glimpse into their spiritual journey. Their rendition highlighted how Indian culture is being embraced with sincerity and love, far beyond geographical boundaries.
This unique cultural exchange unfolds as India and Brazil continue strengthening ties through people-to-people connections. The growing interest in Indian spirituality among Brazilian youth reflects a powerful bridge between two vibrant cultures – one that celebrates harmony, tradition, and mutual respect.
This cultural convergence comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Brazil on the fourth leg of his five-nation tour to attend the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This marks his fourth visit to Brazil, highlighting deepening India-Brazil ties through diplomacy and cultural exchange.
