France has enforced a nationwide smoking ban in public areas aimed at safeguarding public health, with a particular focus on protecting children.
Effective on 29 June, the new law prohibits smoking on beaches, in parks, public gardens, near bus shelters, and outside public facilities such as libraries, swimming pools, and schools.
The move is part of a wider initiative by the French government to cut down tobacco use and shield children from the harms of passive smoking.
The ban comes just one week before the start of France’s school holidays, clearly timed to protect children from exposure to cigarette smoke in public areas like beaches.
Violators of the new law will face a fine of 135 euros.
