Lavender farming—popularly known as the ‘Purple Revolution’ is transforming agriculture in Bhaderwah and other parts of Doda district, as farmers and youth increasingly turn to aromatic crops under the Union Government’s Aroma Mission.
Favourable climate and soil conditions in Bhaderwah have made it an ideal hub for lavender cultivation. The plant, known for its high-value essential oil used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, is offering farmers a more profitable alternative to traditional crops like maize.
The Department of Floriculture, Doda, has been instrumental in promoting this shift by conducting training programmes and awareness camps. “We’re equipping farmers with the right techniques and helping them access markets,” said Pawan Kumar, Assistant Floriculture Officer, Doda.
The movement is also attracting young entrepreneurs. “Lavender farming has significantly improved my income and given me the confidence to start my own venture,” said Arjun Raina, a young farmer from Bhaderwah.
With cultivation expanding across the district, the Purple Revolution is emerging as a powerful symbol of innovation, rural entrepreneurship, and economic upliftment—anchored firmly in the fragrant fields of Bhaderwah.
