The lion population in Gujarat has increased to 891. This information was given by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel. The numbers of lions were increased due to the joint efforts of the Central and State Governments and the commendable cooperation of the locals.
‘Project Lion’ was launched in 2020 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Efforts such as lion population management and health care have gained tremendous momentum through ‘Project Lion’.
The estimated number of lions, which was 674 in the year 2020, has increased to 891 in 5 years and the range of lions has also increased. Lions are now found in 11 districts of Gujarat.
Gujarat is the only natural habitat of the Asiatic lion. The natural environment conducive to the lions spread across 58 talukas in 11 districts covering nearly 35,000 square kilometres in Gujarat.
Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change has launched the 10 years plan ‘Project Lion’ with an estimated budget of Rs 2927.71 crore. The project aimed to increase the number of Asiatic Lions through community engagement, technology driven conservation, human-lion conflict mitigation, wildlife healthcare and habitat management.
