Eight people died and several injured when a wall collapsed at the Simhachalam Temple in Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh early morning today. The cement wall collapsed when devotees were in queue to buy tickets.
The mishap occurred when the annual Chandanmohotsavam celebration was going on at the Shri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple.
Sources said, for the function temporary tents were arranged for the devotees and the cement wall collapsed as a part of a new construction site.
In the early hours of wednesday heavy rains continued for one hour. Due to heavy rain the soil became loose and the temporary tents fell on the newly constructed wall which all fell down.
Rescue operation is underway. NDRF, SDRF, Firefighters and Police all are deployed at the site. Injured devotees were taken to nearby hospitals with the help of NDRF and SDRF.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the loss of lives due to the collapse of a wall in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the injured.
