At the invitation of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium, Bart De Wever, is on an official visit to India from 2-4 September 2026. The Prime Minister of Belgium is accompanied by Belgium’s Minister of Defence and Foreign Trade, Theo Francken, and a high-level delegation of officials and business leaders. This is Prime Minister De Wever’s first visit to India since taking office in February 2025.
Prime Minister De Wever began his visit by paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. Prime Minister De Wever then held bilateral talks with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, first in a restricted format and later with their respective delegations.
Their discussions ranged across the full length and breadth of the relationship between the two countries. Prime Minster Modi hosted a luncheon for Prime Minister De Wever and the visiting delegation.
The two leaders recalled the supreme sacrifice of more than 9,000 Indian soldiers in the Flanders Fields during the First World War.
The two leaders also recalled that Belgium was among the first European countries to establish diplomatic relations with India in 1947.
They noted that the partnership has since flourished on the foundations of shared democratic values, mutual trust, economic complementarities, and strong people-to-people ties.
The leaders expressed their desire for further expanding and deepening this multifaceted relationship.
The 80th anniversary of Belgium-India diplomatic relations in 2027 will give India and Belgium another historical occasion to celebrate the deepening and broadening of the bilateral relationship.
