The 23rd Commonwealth Games (CWG) will begin today in Glasgow, Scotland. Teams from 74 nations will participate in the 10-day event. Olympic medallists Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain are set to represent India at the CWG 2026.
Meanwhile, India have opened their medal tally at the Commonwealth Games before the opening ceremony as the Olympic medallist boxer Lovlina moved straight into the women’s 75kg semifinals after receiving a bye.
With only five athletes in the draw, three competitors, including Lovlina, advanced straight to the last four, while the remaining two were scheduled to contest the lone quarterfinal match.
Lovlina will begin her campaign on July 31 against Taafaki in the semifinals, with a spot in the gold medal bout at stake.
The CWG 2026 will feature just 10 sports, nine fewer than at Birmingham 2022, with competitions spread across four venues within an eight-mile corridor.
Athletics, swimming, 3×3 basketball, track cycling, weightlifting, bowls, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing and judo make up the schedule for the game.
Indian contingent comprises 125 members, including para athletics. India won 61 medals at the last Commonwealth Games.
However, this year’s Commonwealth Games presents a different challenge with fewer medal events and a significantly smaller sporting programme.
