A top commander of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was killed today in an ongoing anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, while security forces continued searches amid indications that another terrorist remains trapped in the area, police said.
The operation in the Chanapora area of Shopian resulted in the killing of Zakir Ganie, a senior Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, officials said.
According to officials, Ganie and another terrorist had evaded security forces for the past five days after being cornered during the operation.
Officials said Ganie’s body was recovered from a cowshed along with arms and ammunition.
“It is a significant achievement for the security forces,” an officer said.
The officer said intermittent firing was heard after Ganie was killed, indicating another terrorist may still be in the area. Security forces have continued the operation.
Jammu and Kashmir Police said one Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist was “neutralised” during a joint operation involving the Shopian Special Operations Group, the Army’s Rashtriya Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force.
