A masterclass in goalscoring efficiency from Erling Haaland and a brick-wall performance from goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland propelled Norway to a magnificent 2-1 victory over Brazil in the Round of 16. Haaland’s clinical brace not only secured Norway’s first-ever ticket to the World Cup quarter-finals but also drew him level with Kylian Mbappé of France and Lionel Messi of Argentina in a thrilling race for the adidas Golden Boot.

For Brazil, the defeat marks their earliest World Cup departure since 1990.

The Seleção survived an early scare when Patrick Berg went close, but they were soon handed a glorious opportunity to take the lead.

Just before the 15-minute mark, a VAR review confirmed that Kristoffer Ajer had mistimed a challenge on Matheus Cunha inside the box, resulting in a penalty. Vinicius Junior handed the adidas TRIONDA over to Bruno Guimarães, but the midfielder’s low spot-kick was brilliantly parried away by a diving Ørjan Nyland.

Nyland, a former youth handball player, proved to be an insurmountable obstacle for the Brazilian frontline.

Before the halftime whistle blew, the 35-year-old veteran used his legs to deny quick-fire efforts from Gabriel Martinelli and Vinicius Junior, keeping the game deadlocked at the break.

Norway raised eyebrows at halftime by withdrawing one of their main creative outlets, Antonio Nusa. Yet, it was a Brazilian substitute who would instantly rue a missed opportunity.

Just 52 seconds after stepping onto the pitch, teenage prodigy Endrick was played clean through on goal by a surgical pass from Vinicius Junior. However, a heavy first touch compromised the angle, and his subsequent shot sailed wide.

Norway’s “Volda Viking” between the posts continued his heroics, thwarting subsequent efforts from Rayan and Guimarães. Then, against the run of play, the Europeans struck.

Following a slick, seven-pass sequence, Nusa’s replacement, Andreas Schjelderup, burst free down the left flank. He floated an exquisite cross into the box, allowing Haaland to rise highest and power a downward header past Alisson.

The Goldenboot Race:

As Brazil threw bodies forward in search of an equalizer, Haaland struck the lethal blow at the end of regulation time. Capitalizing on a late counter, the Manchester City striker steered a precise shot through the legs of Danilo and beyond Alisson’s reach, sending the traveling Norwegian fans into absolute delirium.

A 100th-minute penalty from Neymar deep into stoppage time offered a brief glimmer of hope, but it proved to be nothing more than a footnote to a historic collapse.

Norway’s fairytale run continues on July 11, where a highly anticipated quarter-final showdown with England awaits.
