Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has finalised the formation of the country’s first parliament since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. The newly constituted 210-member People’s Assembly will hold its first session on July 6.
Authorities announced the names of 70 lawmakers, completing the process to convene the chamber. The Assembly includes 21 women, up from the initially announced 15.
Operating under a presidential system established by Sharaa, the parliament will have limited powers under the temporary constitution adopted in March 2025. While it can propose and approve legislation, it does not have the authority to approve or dismiss the government through a vote of confidence.
The People’s Assembly will serve a 30-month renewable term and will exercise legislative authority until a permanent constitution is adopted and fresh elections are held.
The formation of the new parliament is being closely watched as a test of President Sharaa’s commitment to political inclusivity in post-Assad Syria.
