Five people, including two children, were killed and several passengers injured in a severe collision between a sleeper bus and a car on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Unnao. The accident occurred at 4:30 AM today.
The sleeper bus, which was traveling from Haryana to Bihar, suddenly went out of control; it collided with an Ertiga car, plunged off the expressway, and overturned.
The impact was so severe that the car was mangled and dragged for about 20 feet.
The bus also crashed through the expressway railing and fell into a ditch. Chaos and screams erupted at the scene following the crash.
Police arrived upon receiving the information and launched a rescue operation. The injured were taken to the hospital, while the bodies were sent for post-mortem examinations.
According to Bangarmau Circle Officer (CO) Harsh Modi, there were 70 people on the bus and 9 in the car. Four occupants of the car and four bus passengers were injured; those with serious injuries have been referred to the district hospital.
Preliminary investigations suggest the accident was caused by the bus driver dozing off at the wheel, though the police are investigating other aspects as well. The administration has informed the families of the deceased.
