Host Canada has scripted history by reaching the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup for the first time ever, after a dramatic injury-time victory over South Africa.
Canada edged past South Africa 1–0, courtesy of a stunning stoppage-time winner from Stephen Eustáquio.
In a closely contested match in Los Angeles, both sides battled hard but were unable to break the deadlock for most of the game.
Just when the contest appeared destined for a draw, Eustáquio unleashed a superb strike from outside the penalty area deep into injury time, sparking celebrations among the home fans and sealing Canada’s place in the knockout stage.
The result marks a remarkable turnaround for the Canadian side. Heading into this edition of the World Cup, Canada had lost all 6 of its previous FIFA World Cup matches. This campaign, however, has been a historic one. After registering a commanding 6–0 victory over Qatar earlier in the tournament, Canada has now qualified for the Round of 16 for the first time in its history.
Canada will next face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 on July 4 in Houston.
