The BRICS Agriculture Working Group meeting has begun in Indore and will continue until June 11, bringing together delegates from member nations to discuss key issues related to sustainable agriculture, food security, technology and rural development.
Agriculture Ministry Joint Secretary Ajit Kumar Sahu outlined the main agenda of the meetings.
Speaking on the key issues under discussion, Sahu said agriculture remains a crucial agenda for BRICS countries as they are major producers and consumers of agricultural products and together account for nearly half of the world’s population.
He said the meeting will focus on the challenges currently facing the agriculture sector and explore how agriculture can be developed to meet future needs. Discussions will also cover the policies and programmes required to ensure the sector is prepared for emerging challenges.
On the importance of artificial intelligence and smart agriculture, Sahu said technology is a major enabler and a key intervention that can help countries overcome current challenges.
He noted that nations are increasingly adopting new technologies in agriculture.
He highlighted that India has already launched AgriStack and is undertaking several initiatives under its digital agriculture programme, including the AI-enabled Bharat Vistar initiative. Sahu added that other BRICS countries are also leveraging these technologies, making technological cooperation an important area of discussion during the meetings.
