Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw today highlighted the rapid expansion of India’s railway network over the past decade, while he was speaking at the CII Annual Business Summit

He stated that 36,000 kilometres of new railway tracks have been laid and 49,000 kilometres electrified — exceeding the entire rail network of Germany.

Emphasising the scale of transformation in the railway sector, Vaishnaw said railway capital expenditure has surged from around Rs 66,000 crore a few years ago to nearly Rs 2,72,000 crore in the last financial year.

He also added that Indian Railways utilised 98 percent of its budget for the financial year 2026, practically by the last week of February, reflecting the accelerated pace of execution of projects.
