The Jammu Division of Northern Railway has achieved a major milestone by booking 28 parcel vans for the transportation of cherries to Bandra Terminus during the 2026 season, marking a significant boost for horticulture in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to an official press release, each parcel van has a capacity of 23 tonnes, and processing of the requisitions is currently underway. The number of vans booked this season reflects an increase of nearly 100 per cent compared to the previous year, with all 28 requisitions already registered by users.
The consignments are scheduled for the cherry season between May 25 and July 10, with loading points at Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. Of the total, seven parcel vans will originate from Jammu, while 21 will be loaded from Katra.
Officials recalled that in 2025, around 14 parcel vans carrying cherries were transported from Katra to Bandra Terminus via Train No. 12472, which itself was considered a landmark initiative.
Highlighting the significance of the development, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Jammu, Uchit Singhal said the initiative reflects the Railways’ commitment to providing reliable and efficient transport solutions for fruit growers in Kashmir.
“The year 2026 is set to be another historic year for the Jammu Division. Continuous coordination with fruit growers has yielded positive results, with 28 indents registered for the current cherry season,” he said.
He added that the service aims to provide a safe and fast alternative to road transport, ensuring that perishable produce like cherries reaches markets within 30–33 hours while maintaining freshness. The initiative is expected to reduce freight costs and significantly contribute to the economic growth of farmers in the Valley.
Officials said the move underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to strengthening supply chains and supporting the agricultural economy in the region.
