In a significant decision in the Abhijit-Nilotpal lynching case that had shaken the state, the Nagaon Sessions Court on Tuesday convicted 20 out of 45 accused, while acquitting the remaining 25.

The brutal incident took place on 8 June, 2018 at Panjuri village under Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong district.

Two nature-loving youths from Guwahati- Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das — were beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of being child abductors. The duo had actually travelled to visit the Kanthi Langso waterfall when the tragic incident occurred.

The registered case had been under trial in the Nagaon Sessions Court for nearly eight years. The court delivered its verdict today.

The quantum of punishment for the convicted individuals is likely to be announced during the next hearing. The court has reportedly fixed 24 April for the final sentencing.
