The state Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change on Thursday inaugurated the Doyang Wildlife Division at the Wokha Forest Division office.
The division will cover Wokha, Mokokchung, and Zunheboto districts to strengthen wildlife conservation and forest management.
Speaking at the event, Minister C.L. John stressed on ecological balance. He said the new division will help address rising human-elephant conflict, adding that more staff would be deployed.
Principal Secretary Y. Kikheto Sema highlighted the rising human-elephant conflict due to habitat loss and called for coexistence strategies, while Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Vedpal Singh said the division, initiated in 2022, would help tackle wildlife issues, with a control room set up in Wokha.
ADC Renbomo Ezung and Lotha Hoho chairman Mhondamo also expressed hope that the new division would help mitigate conflicts, which have claimed over 10 lives in the district.
Meanwhile, the Forest Utilisation Office in Dimapur has been restructured as Mon Wildlife Division, covering Mon and Longleng districts.
