Vice Chairperson of NDMC, Kuljeet Singh Chahal today inaugurated two CNG-operated Mechanical Road Sweepers (MRS) at Connaught Place, New Delhi.

The initiative has been launched to strengthen mechanized road cleaning and to address the growing concern of air and dust pollution in the capital.

VC Chahal said NDMC is carrying out mechanized sweeping of major roads during both day and night shifts through the deployment of Mechanical Road Sweepers. This advanced cleaning system plays a vital role in reducing road dust, improving air quality, and ensuring safer and cleaner streets for residents and visitors.

Chahal stated, “To achieve the target of sweeping nearly 415 kilometers of roads daily, and to effectively control dust pollution in this high-security and high-footfall VVIP area, the procurement of five new Mechanical Road Sweeper units was essential.”

He informed that the newly inducted sweepers are CNG-operated, in compliance with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders prohibiting the registration of diesel vehicles in Delhi.

He further shared that NDMC has become the first civic body in Delhi to procure CNG-chassis Mechanical Road Sweepers. With this addition, NDMC will significantly enhance its mechanized cleaning capacity. At present, NDMC already operates four Mechanical Road Sweepers in its jurisdiction.

He said that three more Mechanical Road Sweepers (MRS) will be added by the end of this month. The total cost of the five newly procured MRS machines is approximately ₹3.71 crore.

Highlighting the advantages of the MRS, Chahal said that these machines ensure faster and more efficient road cleaning, help control dust and improve air quality, reduce accidents by removing debris, save time and manpower, are eco-friendly and hygienic, and greatly enhance the cleanliness and appearance of the city.

He also mentioned that NDMC has already initiated night wet cleaning and night sweeping operations across its areas to ensure that citizens wake up to a clean, dust-free, and pleasant environment every morning. He expressed confidence that these new MRS machines will play a crucial role in controlling dust pollution and that similar mechanized cleaning initiatives will soon be expanded to other major markets and areas of New Delhi.

On the occasion, Atul Bhargava, President, New Delhi Traders Association, along with shopkeepers of Palika Bazar and Connaught Place, visitors, and officers from the Civil Engineering Department, were also present.
