Republic Day Celebrated in Canada and London

The 77th Republic Day was marked with pride and enthusiasm at the Consulate General of India in Toronto, where members of the Indian diaspora gathered for the National Flag Unfurling Ceremony.

The event brought together officials from the Consulate, community leaders, families, and youth from across the Greater Toronto Area, reflecting the strong bond overseas Indians continue to share with their homeland.

Following the flag unfurling, the Consul General of India addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of Republic Day as a reminder of India’s constitutional values, unity, and democratic foundations, and the role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening India’s global image.

The celebrations also featured cultural performances, including traditional dances by community groups and children, adding colour and energy to the event. The performances showcased India’s rich cultural diversity and the efforts of the diaspora to pass on traditions to the next generation.

Members of the Indian community shared their views, describing Republic Day as a moment of pride, reflection, and emotional connection to India, even while living abroad.

Several attendees said events like these help keep Indian culture, values, and identity alive among younger generations growing up outside India.

Republic Day celebrations at the Toronto Consulate mirrored similar events held by Indian missions around the world, highlighting the global presence of the Indian community and its continued engagement with India.

The Republic Day was alsocelebrated at the Indian High Commission in London,which hosted a formal reception at the historic Guildhall.

The event opened with the national anthems of both nations. High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami addressed the gathering on India’s democratic progress and strengthening international ties, with guests also viewing highlights of the Republic Day parade held in India.
