Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has denounced the guilty verdict and death sentence handed to her in a crimes-against-humanity trial, calling the ruling ‘biased and politically motivated.’
Hasina defied court orders to return to Dhaka to face charges that she ordered a deadly crackdown on the student-led uprising that ultimately toppled her government.
In a statement issued on Monday, she alleged that the verdict was delivered by ‘a rigged tribunal established and presided over by an unelected government with no democratic mandate,’ insisting the process was neither fair nor impartial.
Hasina added that she is ‘not afraid to face her accusers but only before what she described as a proper tribunal, where evidence can be weighed and tested fairly.
Meanwhile India’s Ministry of External Affairs has issued its first reaction to the verdict delivered by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In a statement on Monday, the ministry said India noted the verdict announced by the “International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh” concerning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Describing India as a close neighbour, the ministry said New Delhi remains commited to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including in peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country. We will always engage constructively with all stakeholders to that end.
