India commemorate the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas today with honoring the brave soldiers and air warriors who sacrificed their lives defending the nation during the 1999 Kargil War. At the Kargil War Memorial, Drass, Lt Governor of Ladakh Kavindra Gupta and Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, laid wreaths in tribute to the martyrs.
Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth and Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Mansukh Mandaviya also paid homage to the fallen heroes. The ceremony recalled the fierce battles fought in the high-altitude conflict with Pakistan in May to July 1999.
To mark the occasion, the Chief of Army Staff launched the e-Shraddhanjali portal and inaugurated the Indus View Point via video conferencing, enabling digital tributes and enhancing the memorial experience for visitors and families of the martyrs.
In his address, the Army Chief hailed the indomitable spirit of Indian troops, invoking their recent success in Operation Sindoor, where multiple terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir were neutralized. He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to defending national integrity with precision and courage.
In a significant move to bolster India’s military readiness, General Dwivedi also announced a sweeping enhancement of brigade-level capabilities. He stated that several new resources and facilities would be integrated to sharpen the operational effectiveness of combat units across the country.
The 1999 Kargil War, fought under Operation Vijay, saw Indian forces reclaim strategic mountain heights from infiltrators, securing a landmark victory that remains a symbol of India’s military valor and unwavering resolve.
