At least 200 people are feared dead after Nigerian military jets struck a village market while pursuing Islamist militants in the northeast of the country.
Nigeria’s military said it carried out a precise airstrike on a known terrorist base and logistics centre near the deserted village of Jilli, claiming that many militants were killed.
The Nigerian Air Force, responding to reports of civilian casualties, said it had opened an investigation after reports suggested the strike may have hit a local market in Jilli and caused civilian casualties.
Earlier, the Air Force said it had killed Boko Haram militants in the Jilli axis in Borno State. Three other residents and an official from an international humanitarian agency confirmed the strike and the estimated death toll.
