102-yr-old votes under home voting initiative for Aizawl municipal polls

Mizoram election department has commenced home voting initiative for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) polls enabling over 2,700 elderly citizens, individuals with chronic illnesses, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to cast their votes from the comfort of their homes on Monday, an election official said.

The special voting arrangement, which started early this morning, will continue until Thursday, the official said. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and other essential polling materials were dispatched from the District Election Officer’s Office in the morning to all municipal wards under tight supervision, he said.

Municipal Returning Officers (MROs), accompanied by the General Observer, ensured secure transportation from the strong room. Home voting is being conducted across all 19 AMC wards, with dedicated teams assigned to each ward.

A total of 2,769 applicants have registered for this service across all 19 AMC Wards.

The official said that a total of 2,769 applicants have registered for the service across all the 19 wards, with the entire process expected to be completed within four days.

Ward No. 2 recorded the highest number of applicants at 209. As per preliminary information, the oldest participant in the home voting exercise on Monday was 102-year-old Nghakliani from Dawrpui Veng neighbouring (Ward IX), underscoring the initiative’s reach and inclusivity, the official said.

A total of 68 candidates, including 28 women, are in the fray for AMC polls. The ZPM, MNF and Congress have fielded 19 candidates each, while the BJP nominated 11 candidates.

Polling for the urban body will be held on April 21, while counting of votes will take place on April 27.
